Wildrose Objects To Boom And Bust Health Plan

Following the release of Phase One of the Health Capital Plan, the Wildrose Alliance called on the Government of Alberta for predictable, long term health planning.

“This government talks about the way forward, but when it comes to health and infrastructure planning, all we see are erratic, kneejerk decisions,” said Paul Hinman, Deputy Leader and MLA, Calgary-Glenmore. “We need a plan that works for ten years, not one that gets changed every ten months. They cannot continue to spend and build haphazardly and still ensure value for taxpayer’s dollars. When you fail to plan properly, you plan to fail.”

While the government refers to a plan for new health facilities, there are no firm details to date. Despite the government claiming prices have fallen, making construction more affordable, project costs have actually doubled.  Today Grande Prairie was promised $520 million for a new regional hospital, but they were promised the same facility 3 years ago for $250 million.

“This is a failure of leadership and vision,” noted Danielle Smith, Wildrose Alliance Leader. “We cannot have the best-performing health system in Canada if plans and promises are consistently broken, reversed or abandoned.”

The Wildrose Alliance was formed in January 2008 and has four elected Members of the Legislature. The Wildrose advances competent, principled and conservative policies that will lower government spending, increase economic opportunities, empower communities and strengthen individual liberties and freedoms.
