Put Vehicle Fee Down For Good: Forsyth
EDMONTON, AB (August 26, 2011): Suspending the $15 vehicle search fee for Alberta municipalities was the right decision to make but Wildrose Service Alberta Critic Heather Forsyth today urged the government to scrap it entirely.
Yesterday, after months of opposition from Alberta municipalities and the Wildrose Caucus, Service Alberta Minister Heather Klimchuk announced the fee would not come into effect on Sept. 1 as originally planned. However, she left the door open to bringing it back in future budgets.
“This fee was a mistake from the very beginning and it would be a mistake if they brought it back in the future,” Forsyth said. “This government has got to stop making others pay for their costly mistakes and I urge the Minister to the right thing and put the fee down for good.”
Wildrose Finance Critic Rob Anderson called the fee a money grab from municipalities and said the government should start controlling their spending instead of squeezing lower levels of government for additional revenues.
“These guys will try anything if it means they don’t have to control their spending,” Anderson said. “We’ve seen that with this unfair tax on our already overburdened municipalities. I hope we’ve seen the last of this fee, but given the PC track record on spending, I have my doubts.”
The Wildrose Caucus stands for free enterprise, less government, increased personal freedom and democracy.
