Democratic Reform

As an elected representative, I remember one important principle: I have been elected to serve the people of Calgary-Fish Creek, and that means representing your interests first. That is what I have always tried to do whenever it comes to every vote and it’s why I crossed the floor to join the Wildrose Alliance Caucus in early 2010. It was a hard decision, but it was also based on months of feedback and direction from my constituents.

To help make our provincial government more responsive and accountable to you – and to help remove some of the partisan politics out of the system – here are some of the things that I will continue to advocate on your behalf:

  • Fixed election dates every four years. The Legislative Assembly will still be able to call a vote of non-confidence in the government at any time.
  • Elections for Senators who represent Alberta.
  • Free votes in the Legislature with the exception of the budget and votes of non-confidence.
  • Establishing a truly independent agency to determine the compensation, pension and severance packages of elected government officials.
  • Limiting the size of the provincial cabinet to 16 members.
  • Instituting strict conflict of interest guidelines through the Provincial Ethics Commissioner.
  • A truly open and comprehensive Freedom of Information Act.
  • Set dates for Throne Speeches, Budget Announces and Legislative Sessions.
