April 2010 Whats on your mind

April was an interesting month, and the results below surprised me as your MLA. Calgary-Fish Creek’s priorities have tended to stay the same, but the April results took an interesting departure. Your feedback in April was overwhelmingly focused on transportation issues. When the government tabled Bill 16 – Traffic Safety (Distracted Driving) Amendment Act – many of you offered your comments to me. Your second priority was health care. This has been a constant focus and concern for residents of Calgary-Fish Creek. Recent changes to the provincial cataract surgery program has created a great deal of uncertainty and anxiety for many who are waiting for a procedure to be done locally. As your MLA I raised these concerns in the Legislature and the media. I will not lose sight of this important issue – or the importance of making the right decisions when it comes to health care reform and funding.

Your third priority in April was education. More specifically, many of you have children who are preparing for their post-secondary studies and need to know how much will be required to pay for university, college or other skills training. Some of you are students and are wondering how much you may need to earn during a school year, cost of student loans and where you may be able to afford to study. I have heard these concerns and understand the dilemma that many of you face while the government decides how to approach future tuition fees.
