Wildrose MLA introduces Mandatory Reporting of Child Pornography Act

Today, Wildrose Alliance MLA Heather Forsyth (Calgary-Fish Creek) introduced second reading on Bill 202 (the Mandatory Reporting of Child Pornography Act) to help combat child pornography.

“The Mandatory Reporting of Child Pornography Act provides the public and companies with legal protections for reporting potential child pornography,” stated Forsyth. “This legislation helps modernize some of our crime-fighting tools to ensure that we do everything possible to prevent the continued spread of child pornography throughout our communities.”

Highlights of Forsyth’s Bill 202 includes the mandating the reporting of potential child pornography to the police or another report entity and protecting those who report from legal repercussions.

“As former Solicitor General and Minister of Children Services, I saw how frustrated the public became when criminal activity was taking place and they couldn’t report that information without fear of being charged, implicated or targeted,” added Forsyth. “Likewise, I know how hard it is for law enforcement when internet service providers or other entities are not permitted to share information in a timely fashion.”

“This bill is another way that we can show Albertans and the law enforcement community that we are serious about combating child pornography and preventing innocent children from being exploited to satisfy the sick desires of sexual deviants,” concluded Forsyth.

The Wildrose Alliance was formed in January 2008 and has three elected Members of the Legislature. The Wildrose advances competent, principled and conservative policies that will lower government spending, increase economic opportunities, empower communities and strengthen individual liberties and freedoms.
