Government of Alberta releases Budget 2009: Building On Our Strength

Budget 2009: Building On Our Strength is Alberta’s fiscal blueprint to support the province’s economy while continuing to provide priority services for Albertans.

This year’s budget is built around government’s four point plan for economic recovery, which calls for keeping an eye on spending, using savings to protect programs and services for Albertans while keeping taxes low, continuing to invest in infrastructure, and promoting the province on the world stage.

Budget 2009 plans for spending of $36.4 billion to maintain important government programs and services, especially for those Albertans most in need, and to support continued responsible development of the province’s energy resources.

Statement from Heather Forsyth, MLA Calgary-Fish Creek:

The recent tragic deaths of 4 Canadian Armed Forces personnel in Afghanistan puts into stark perspective the sacrifices that our men and women in uniform make for the cause of freedom, peace and security.

Since the First World War, the contribution that Canadian soldiers, peacekeepers and support personnel have made to the international community has been incredible considering our nation’s relatively small population.  We were among the first to come to the aid of our European allies in not just one, but both World Wars.  Canadian troops saw action in many of the major conflicts of the 20th century, and developed a well-earned reputation for tenacity, perseverance and decency.

This reputation has endured into the 21 st century, with our participation in United Nations peacekeeping efforts, and NATO actions such as the war against Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.  Our brave men and women are fighting in the deserts and mountains of Afghanistan so that Afghan girls are allowed to attend school, and learn to read.  They are fighting so that the Afghan people can, for the first time in living memory, choose their leaders and the direction of their country.

While uninformed and ignorant voices on the Fox network are criticising our nation’s commitment to “the war effort”, Canadian sons, fathers, mothers and daughters are paying the ultimate sacrifice to ensure peace and security for the people of Afghanistan .

I speak not only for myself, but for all the people of Calgary-Fish Creek when I express my overwhelming pride and appreciation for the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces.  The work that they do will make this a safer and better world for us, for the people of Afghanistan, and for future generations.

Our prayers are with them, to bring them home safely.
